How dilution calculations work


Dilutions follow the equation:

C1 × V1 = C2 × V2

Here:

  • C1 = starting concentration
  • V1 = starting volume
  • C2 = target concentration
  • V2 = final total volume after dilution

Rearranging the equation gives:

V2 = (C1 × V1) / C2

Example: Diluting 50 mL of a 10% stock solution down to 2% V2 = (10 × 50) / 2 = 250 mL total Diluent to add = 250 − 50 = 200 mL

This method works for percent solutions, molarity, mass/volume concentrations, and any dilution where concentration scales linearly.
