Percent composition tells you what percentage of a compound’s total mass comes from one specific element or component. How percent composition works


Percent composition expresses how much of a compound’s mass comes from one element or component. The formula is:

percent composition = (element mass / total compound mass) × 100

Example: In water (H₂O), oxygen contributes about 16 g of the roughly 18 g molar mass. percent composition = (16 / 18) × 100 = 88.89%

You can repeat the same calculation for each element in a compound. The percentages should add up to 100%, aside from rounding differences.




Examples of percent composition calculations


Example 1: Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
Carbon mass = 12 g Oxygen mass = 32 g Total mass = 44 g Carbon percent = (12 / 44) × 100 = 27.27% Oxygen percent = (32 / 44) × 100 = 72.73%

Example 2: Sodium chloride (NaCl)
Na mass = 23 g Cl mass = 35.5 g Total mass = 58.5 g Na percent = 39.32% Cl percent = 60.68%

Example 3: Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)
Carbon mass = 72 g Hydrogen mass = 12 g Oxygen mass = 96 g Total mass = 180 g C percent = 40% H percent = 6.67% O percent = 53.33%

Example 4: Magnesium oxide (MgO)
Mg mass = 24.3 g O mass = 16 g Total mass = 40.3 g Mg percent = 60.29% O percent = 39.71%
