Tip Split Calculator

Split a bill and tip evenly among any number of people

Tip Split Calculator

Splitting a restaurant bill in the United States can get confusing — especially when you add a tip on top of the pre‑tax total. Whether you're dining with friends, sharing a group meal, or splitting a delivery order, this tip split calculator shows exactly how much each person owes. It calculates the tip amount, the total bill including tip, and the per‑person share in USD.

What is the bill, the tip percent, and how many people?

Bill amount ($): Tip percent: Number of people:

How tip splitting works

To split a bill evenly, you first calculate the tip amount, then add it to the bill, and finally divide the total by the number of people. The formula is:

total = bill + (P/100 × bill)
per person = total / number of people

Example: A $120 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways Tip = (20/100 × 120) = $24 Total = 120 + 24 = $144 Per person = 144 / 4 = $36

This method is used in restaurants, bars, cafés, delivery orders, and group dining situations across the U.S.

Examples of splitting bills

Example 1: 18% tip on a $90 bill split 3 ways
Tip = (18/100 × 90) = 16.20 Total = 106.20 Per person = $35.40

Example 2: 20% tip on a $200 group dinner split 5 ways
Tip = (20/100 × 200) = 40 Total = 240 Per person = $48

Example 3: 15% tip on a $60 brunch split 2 ways
Tip = (15/100 × 60) = 9 Total = 69 Per person = $34.50

Example 4: 22% tip on a $150 celebration meal split 6 ways
Tip = (22/100 × 150) = 33 Total = 183 Per person = $30.50

These examples show how tipping percentages and group sizes affect the per‑person total.

Why this calculator is useful

Splitting bills can get complicated when:

  • the tip is based on the pre‑tax amount
  • different people guess the wrong total
  • the group wants to avoid under‑tipping
  • everyone wants to pay their fair share
  • the restaurant adds automatic gratuity

This calculator ensures accuracy and avoids awkward math at the table.
