How percentage allocation works
Percentage allocation is based on a simple formula. You take the total amount and multiply it by the percentage share to find the allocated portion. The remainder is what is left after the allocation:
share = (P/100) × total
remaining = total − share
For example, imagine a $50,000 salary with a 4% employer 401(k) match:
share = (4/100 × 50,000) = $2,000
remaining = 50,000 − 2,000 = $48,000
In this case, the match is added on top of your salary, but the math behind the allocation is the same: you are calculating what portion of the total corresponds to a given percentage.

You allocate 30% of a $2,000 monthly budget to housing:
