Instantly calculate a 15%, 18%, or 20% restaurant tip

Tip Calculator

Tipping is a standard part of dining in the United States. Most restaurants expect a tip based on the pre‑tax total, with 18–20% considered normal for good service. This percentage tip calculator helps you quickly determine the correct tip amount and the final total you should pay. Whether you’re dining out, ordering delivery, or paying for table service, this tool gives you an accurate tip calculation in USD.

What is the bill, and what percent tip?

Bill amount ($): Tip percent:

How tip percentages work

A tip is calculated by multiplying the bill amount by the tip percentage. The formula is simple:

tip = (P/100) × bill
total = bill + tip

Example: An $89 bill with an 18% tip tip = (18/100 × 89) = $16.02 total = 89 + 16.02 = $105.02

This is the same math used in restaurants, cafés, bars, delivery services, and ride‑share tipping. Most U.S. tipping guidelines recommend:

  • 15% for average service
  • 18% for good service
  • 20%+ for excellent service
  • 10% for takeout or counter service (optional)

This calculator works for any percentage, so you can adjust based on service quality or local tipping customs.

Examples of tip calculations

Example 1: 20% tip on a $50 bill
tip = (20/100 × 50) = 10 total = $60

Example 2: 15% tip on a $120 dinner
tip = (15/100 × 120) = 18 total = $138

Example 3: 22% tip on a $35 brunch
tip = (22/100 × 35) = 7.70 total = $42.70

Example 4: 18% tip on a $200 group meal
tip = (18/100 × 200) = 36 total = $236

These examples show how tipping percentages apply to restaurants, delivery drivers, hotel service, and bar tabs.
