How stacked discounts work


Stacked discounts are multiplicative, not additive. You apply the first discount to the original price, then apply the second discount to the new reduced price. The formula is:

final price = V × (1 − P1/100) × (1 − P2/100)

Example: A $100 item with 20% off, then an extra 10% off Price after first discount: 100 × 0.80 = $80 Price after second discount: 80 × 0.90 = $72

The total discount is 28%, not 30%. This surprises many shoppers because the discounts do not stack linearly.

Example 1: 30% off + 15% off
Original price: $200 After 30% off: 200 × 0.70 = 140 After 15% off: 140 × 0.85 = $119 Total discount: 40.5%
