How percent-to-ratio conversion works


A percentage is already a ratio to 100. For example, 25% literally means “25 out of 100.” To convert a percentage into a simplified ratio, write it as a fraction P/100 and divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD). This produces a clean, simplified ratio that is easy to use in proportions.

Example: Convert 25% to a ratio
25% = 25/100. The greatest common divisor of 25 and 100 is 25. Divide both numbers by 25 → 1/4. So 25% becomes the ratio 1:4.

Example: Convert 60% to a ratio
60% = 60/100. The GCD of 60 and 100 is 20. Divide both numbers by 20 → 3/5. So 60% becomes the ratio 3:5.

This same method works for any percentage, including decimals like 12.5% or large values like 250%.
